The name of Georg Wilhelm Steller (see stellerite), used attrib. or in the possessive to designate certain animals associated with his explorations, as Steller's (eider) (duck), a black and white duck with reddish underparts, Polysticta stelleri, found in Siberia, Alaska, and Canada; Steller('s) jay, a blue jay with a dark crest, Cyanocitta stelleri, found in western North America; Steller's sea-cow, an extinct sirenian, Hydrodamalis stelleri, once found in the Bering Sea; Steller('s) sea-lion, a large sea-lion, Eumetopias jubata, found in the northern Pacific.
