A hydrous basic phosphate of scandium occurring as transparent, usually colourless, orthorhombic crystals, and now identified with kolbeckite (eggonite).
1940Larsen & Montgomery in Amer. Mineralogist XXV. 513 A few specimens contain orthorhombic crystals distinct from any previously described mineral... The mineral is named sterrettite in honor of Dr. Douglas B. Sterrett who was one of the first investigators of the Utah and Nevada variscite deposits. 1959Bull. Geol. Soc. Amer. LXX. 1648 Powder patterns of sterrettite and kolbeckite showed that their cell sizes are identical with that of synthetic Sc(PO4).2H2O.., indicating that the major cation might be scandium rather than aluminum. 1968Amer.
