1. a. In Spanish parts of America: A rudely-built house, a hut or hovel; also, a collection of huts, a hamlet or village.
1845Darwin Voy. Nat. iv. (1873) 71 We took up our residence in the rancho, or hovel, of an old Spaniard. 1860Merc. Marine Mag. VII. 37 To the westward..there is a rancho of 8 or 9 huts. 1887E. F. Knight Cruise Falcon (ed. 4) 107 Every native likes if possible to have a little wooden saint of his own in his rancho. 1931Times Lit. Suppl. 19 Mar. 214/2 To live in a mud ‘rancho’, eat frugally..was no hardship for this class of immigrant.
b. spec. A hut or shed, or a collection of these, put up for the accommodation of travellers. Hence, in extended use, a roadhouse or inn.
