stishovite Min.|ˈstɪʃəvaɪt| [f. the name of S. M. Stishov, Russian geochemist, who first synthesized it in 1961: see -ite1.] A dense, tetragonal polymorph of silica, formed at very high pressure and found in meteorite craters. Cf. coesite.
1962E. C. T. Chao et al. in Jrnl. Geophysical Res. LXVII. 419/1 Stishov and Popova (1961) recently synthesized a high-density polymorph of SiO2 at 1200°–1400°C and at a pressure reported to be above 160,000 atmospheres... In honor of the senior author of the paper announcing the synthesis of this new polymorph, we propose to name the new mineral stishovite. 1971I. G. Gass et al. Understanding Earth i. 35/1 The diamonds occasionally contain minute inclusions of coesite..but do not contain stishovite, another polymorph forming at even higher pressures. 1978Nature 20 Apr. 714/2 Stishovite is the highest pressure polymorph of silica. It possesses the rutile structure with a density of 4·28 g cm-3 and is characterised by sixfold coordination of silicon by oxygen. |
