Gr. στοµατο-, combining form of στοµατ-, στόµα mouth (see stoma): occurring in modern scientific terms, chiefly zoological. ‖ ˌstomatoˈdendron (pl. -dendra) [Gr. δένδρον tree], each of the dendritic branches bearing minute polyps in the family Rhizostomidæ of hydrozoans. ˌstomatoˈgastric a. [gastric], pertaining to or connected with the mouth and stomach; applied to a system of visceral nerves in invertebrates. ˈstomatoˌgnath [Gr. γνάθος jaw], a generic term for the hard structures or ‘teeth’ in the stomodæum of various classes of animals, as molluscs, crustaceans, annelids, rotifers, etc. stomaˈtology [-logy], the scientific study of the mouth; hence ˌstomatoˈlogical a., relating to stomatology; stomaˈtologist, one versed in stomatology. ˈstomatoˈmorphous |-ˈmɔːfəs|, a. Bot. [Gr. µορϕή form], mouth-shaped. ˈstomatoˌplasty [-plasty], plastic surgery of the mouth (or of the os uteri); hence ˌstomatoˈplastic a., pertaining to stomatoplasty. stomaˈtoporoid a. [f. mod.L. Stomatopora (f. Gr. πόρος pore) + -oid], resembling or characteristic of a coral of the fossil genus Stomatopora. ˈstomatoˌscope |-skəʊp| [-scope], an instrument for examining the interior of the mouth.
