1. Falconry. Cf. stand n.1 7.
1580–3Greene Mamillia i. 4 b, The hawke that commeth at the first cal, wil neuer be stedfast on the stond. 1587― Carde of Fancie (1593) E 3 b, The Hawke that bates at euerie cast of the Lure will neuer be stedfast on the stonde.
2. Impediment, stoppage. (Only in Bacon.)
1605Bacon Adv. Learn. ii. xxii. §10 That..you may work out the knots and stondes of the mind. 1612― Ess., Studies (Arb.) 11 Nay, thear is no stond or impediment in the wit, but may be wrought out by fit studies. a1626― Disc. touching Helps Intell. Powers Resusc. (1657) 277 The Removing of the Stonds, and Impediments, of the Mind, doth often clear, the passage, and Current, to a Mans Fortune.
