The name of Murray Raney (1885–1966), U.S. engineer, used attrib. in Raney nickel, a form of nickel catalyst first prepared by him (see quot. 1932) which has a high surface area and is used in organic hydrogenation reactions.
First described by Raney in U.S. Patent 1,628,190 (1927).
