strobo-|ˈstrəʊbəʊ| formative element f. the first syllable of stroboscope, etc., as in ˈstrobotorch, a light source designed to give very brief flashes of light at a known rate; ˈstrobotron [-tron], a gas-filled cold-cathode discharge tube used as a strobotorch, the flashing rate being determined by the frequency of the voltage applied to a control grid.
