diopside Min.|daɪˈɒpsaɪd| [a. F. diopside (Haüy 1801), irreg. f. Gr. δι-, (di-2) twice + ὄψις appearance, aspect, but viewed by later authors as a deriv. of Gr. δίοψις a view through, f. δι-, δια- through.] A synonym of pyroxene; now usually restricted to the transparent varieties.
