diplococcus Bacteriol.|dɪpləʊˈkɒkəs| Pl. diplococci |-ˈkɒkaɪ, -ˈkɒkiː|. [mod.L., f. Gr. διπλό-ος double + κόκκος grain, seed, adopted as a genus name by A. Weichselbaum 1886, in Wiener med. Jahrb. LXXXII. 483.] Any coccus that occurs predominantly in pairs, esp. one belonging to the genus of parasitic bacteria so called, which includes the pneumococcus, D. pneumoniæ.
