dismutase Biochem.|ˈdɪsmjuːteɪz| [f. dismutation + -ase.] Any enzyme that catalyses a dismutation reaction. Chiefly in Comb., esp. superoxide dismutase (catalysing the dismutation of superoxide ions into oxygen).
1937[see enol]. 1968McCord & Fridovich in Jrnl. Biol. Chem. CCXLIII. 5759/2 This..establishes that the bovine erythrocyte dismutase is distinct from carbonic anhydrase. Ibid., This particular dismutase activity could be of importance to living cells. 1969Ibid. CCXLIV. 6049 (heading) Superoxide dismutase. 1975Nature 7 Aug. 510/1 Research on superoxide dismutase has suggested that this enzyme may also have controlled oxygen toxicity in ancient living tissue. 1983Oxf. Textbk. Med. I. vi. 66/1 Once an electron is successfully attached to an oxygen molecule it becomes a highly corrosive superoxide ion... Superoxide dismutase and various peroxidases have evolved to protect most cells from the effects of the spontaneous superoxide ion formation that occurs. |
