A style of Japanese painting in black ink on a white surface characterized by bold brush-work and subtle gradations of tone (see quot. 1970).
1912E. F. Fenollosa Epochs Chinese & Jap. Art II. xi. 43 Kakei..made a decided change in Chinese landscape style: the ‘In’ style..in that he introduced the utmost decorative splendour of notan, or dark and light beauty.
