The commercial name of the curled pods of Cæsalpinia coriaria, a tree found in tropical America and the West Indies; they were introduced to Europe from Caracas in 1768, and are highly astringent, and much used in tanning. Also the tree itself. b. The similar pods of C. tinctoria used in Lima for making ink (Cent. Dict.).
