Gr. ἔχιον the name used by Dioscorides, f. ἔχις viper, in allusion to the spotted stem.] A plant of the genus of shrubs or herbs so called, belonging to the family Boraginaceæ and native to Europe; cf. viper's bugloss (viper 6 b).
