Eleonora, n. Ornith.|ɛlɪəˈnɔːrə| Also Eleanora. The name of Eleonora of Arborea (see below), used in the possessive and attrib. to designate a brown or slate falcon, Falco eleonoræ, similar to but larger than the hobby, which occurs as a dark and a light morph on islands and cliffs in the Mediterranean area. Named by G. Gené 1840, in Mem. della R. Accad. delle Sci. di Torino II. 41. Gené proposed, by suggesting the name Falco Eleonoræ, to commemorate the protection given to nesting hawks and falcons by the code of laws promulgated by Eleonora (c 1350–1404), a princess of Sardinia, in 1392.
