tall oil, n. Brit. |ˈtɑːl ɔɪl|, U.S. |ˈtɑl ˈɔɪl| [‹ German Tallöl (1909; > n.1)), with substitution of oil n.1 for the second element.] A resinous mixture of fatty acids, resin acids, and plant sterols recovered when resinous wood pulp is digested during paper-making, used in making lubricants, paints, and adhesives.
