tanzanite Min.|ˈtænzənaɪt| [f. as prec. + -ite1.] A highly pleochroic violet-blue gemstone that is a variety of zoisite in which some of the aluminium is replaced by vanadium.

The gem, discovered last year in Africa's Tanzania, has the blue coloring and relative transparency of a sapphire. 1975Nat.
