targa, n.|ˈtɑːgə| [The name of a model of Porsche motor car with this feature, introduced in 1965, f. It. targa plate, shield, prob. after the Targa Florio (= ‘Florio Shield’), a motor time-trial held annually in Sicily.] attrib. (esp. as targa roof, targa top), designating a style of roof hood on a sports car, of which the forward, rigid section is detachable, leaving a soft, convertible rear section and a central transverse roll-bar for structural support. Also absol., a car having this feature, and Comb., as targa-style, targa-type.
