1. The act of adjourning, or of putting off till another day, or indefinitely.
1641Termes de la Ley 11 Adjournement, is when any Court is dissolved and determined, and assigned to be kept againe at another place or time. 1762Hume Hist. Eng. (1806) IV. lxv. 789 The parliament met, according to adjournment. 1875Stubbs Const. Hist. III. xx. 480 The distinction between adjournment and prorogation, in so far as the one belongs to the houses and the other to the crown, is a modern distinction.
2. The state of being adjourned; the interval during which the business of an assembly is formally deferred.
