[A refashioning of earlier amerveil(le, a. OFr. amerveillie-r, earlier émerveillier, esmerveillier to marvel, admire; with a- :—es- :—L. ex-, confused with a- :—L. ad. This pseudo-etymological spelling arose in MFr., whence introduced into Eng. by Caxton; mod.Fr. has restored émerveiller. See amerveil; also a- prefix 10 and ad-.]
