epidendrum|ɛpɪˈdɛndrəm| Also -dendron. [mod.L. (C. Linnæus Genera Plantarum (1737) 272), f. Gr. ἐπί upon + δένδρον tree. Cf. epidendral, -ic adjs.] Any of various chiefly epiphytic orchids of the genus so named, native to the western hemisphere (esp. tropical America).
