▪ I. epigone1 rare.|ˈɛpɪgəʊn| [In pl. a. Fr. épigones, ad. L. epigonī, a. Gr. ἐπίγονοι, pl. of ἐπίγονος born afterwards, f. ἐπί upon, after + -γονος, f. root of γίγνεσθαι to be born. The designation οἱ ἐπίγονοι (L. Epigoni) was applied esp. to the sons of the seven heroes who led the war against Thebes; the mod. use is in allusion to this.] One of a succeeding generation. Chiefly in pl. the less distinguished successors of an illustrious generation. Also in L. form (chiefly with initial capital) eˈpigoni.
