Either of two isomers differing in the configuration of the atoms about a single asymmetric carbon atom in a compound containing other asymmetric carbon atoms; orig. in a more restricted sense (see quot. 19481). Hence epiˈmeric a., of, having the qualities of, or standing in relation to another compound as, an epimer; eˈpimerism [ad. G. epimerie (E. Votoček 1911, loc. cit.): see -ism], the fact or condition of having epimers.
1911Chem. Abstr. V. 1606 It is proposed that sugars which are related in the same manner as is glucose..to mannose..should be distinguished by prefixing epi- to the name of 1 member of the pair.
