escudo|ɛˈskjuːdəʊ| [Sp., Pg.:—L. scūtum shield. Cf. écu, scudo.] A Portuguese silver coin, originally of the value of a crown. Also applied to other former coins, gold or silver, in Spain, Portugal, and Spanish America.
