terephthalic, a. Chem.|tɛrəfˈθælɪk| [f. tere-bic + phthalic.] Derived from or containing terebic and phthalic acids, as in terephthalic acid (also called insolinic acid), C8H6O4 = C6H4(CO2H)2, a dibasic acid produced as a white tasteless crystalline powder, nearly insoluble in water, alcohol, and ether.

Hence tereˈphthalamide, an amide of terephthalic acid: see quot. 1868; tereˈphthalate (also teˈre-), a salt of this acid.
