A genus of bacteria of the order Eubacteriales, comprising Gram-positive anaerobic bacilli found in the intestines of vertebrates and in soil and water; formerly a subgenus (see quot. 1939).
1939D. H. Bergey et al. Man. Determ. Bacteriol. (ed. 5) 29 Janke..1930..proposes an outline which is slightly modified... Two new generic terms are used, Anaerobacillus and Eubacterium. Ibid. 30 Genus 1. Bacterium Sub-genus..b. Eubacterium. 1946[see bacteriolytic a.]. 1957G. E. Hutchinson Treat. Limnol. I. xi. 715 In extreme cases, another iron eubacterium, Ochrobium teetum occurred at slightly lower levels.
Add:b. Chiefly in pl. eubacteria. Any prokaryotic organism which is regarded as belonging to the group of ‘true bacteria’, currently taken to include all prokaryotes which are not archaebacteria. (Later examples.)
