extranet, n. Telecomm. and Computing. Brit. |ˈɛkstrənɛt|, U.S. |ˈɛkstrəˌnɛt| [‹ extra- prefix + -net comb. form, after intranet n.] An intranet that can be accessed, via the Internet, by a limited group of authorized external users; a network comprising two or more intranets belonging to different organizations, linked via the Internet. Quot. 1995 represents an isolated use alluding to the exclusion of most of the world from the Internet (whether by use of the prefix ex- (in external) or extra-), but without intending the sense defined above.
