a. Phr. famille de robe: a family founded by a lawyer; a legal family (in pre-Revolutionary France). (See robe n. 4 b.)

b. famille jaune, Chinese enamelled porcelain of which the predominant colour is yellow; so also famille noire, famille rose, famille verte, in which the predominant colour is, respectively, black, red, and green.
