The same word is probably reflected by Old Saxon ās-, Old High German ansi-, ans- as elements in personal names; compare e.g. the Old English personal name Ōslāc with Old Icelandic Ásleikr and Old High German (in Latinized form) Ansleicus.The identity of the rune name with the word for a god is likely but not certain.]
A group of gods, including Odin and Thor, often associated with war and the sky and contrasted with the Vanir (cf. Vanir n.). Also (more loosely): the Norse gods collectively.
