a. The liquor which has been passed through a filter.

b. attrib., as filtrate factor, any soluble unidentified substance in a filtrate, esp. such a substance affecting the growth of an organism.
1937Edgar & Macrae in Biochem. Jrnl. XXXI. 893 The second constituent was present in the filtrate after fuller's earth treatment of the yeast extract; this we have called the yeast fuller's earth filtrate factor. 1965Mycologia LVII. 273 For M[orchella] crassipes the beneficial effect is accounted for mainly..by the minerals supplied by the natural product, especially Mn and Ca.
