A yellow crystalline compound, C15H10O6, formerly obtained from young fustic (Rhus cotinus) and various other trees for use as a dye.
1865Chem. News 17 Mar. 126/1 M. Chevreul, who has been almost alone in his chemical researches on fustic, found in it—1. A yellow colouring matter, presenting itself when pure in the form of small crystalline needles, and which he called fissetine [rendering fisettin], or fisetic acid; 2. A red substance. 1959N.
