Fortin, n.2|ˈfɔːtɪn| The name of J. Fortin (1750–1831), French physicist, used attrib. or in the possessive to designate a type of mercury barometer invented by him.

Office) (ed. 2) 80 Fortin barometer, a portable form of mercurial barometer in which the zero of the scale is fixed by a pointer, inside the cistern. By making the cistern partly of leather and providing an adjusting screw, the level of mercury in the cistern can be brought up to the scale zero before each reading is taken. 1970Encycl. Brit.
