F. récipiangle, f. stem of L. recipĕre: see receive and angle.] An instrument formerly used (chiefly in France) for measuring and laying off angles, esp. in fortification. (See first quot.) The description in Chambers is based on the article in Trevoux Dict. Univ. (1721).
