1939Nature 8 Apr. 602/1 -tron should be restricted to signify either an instrument or a particle, but not both{ddd}-on taken by itself..seems the most natural ending for a particle. 1949Ibid. 13 Aug. 263/2 The Amsterdam conference [of the International Union of Physics] attempted to dispose of the curious modern theory that the ancient Greek termination for a fundamental particle was ‘-tron’. It blessed the word ‘meson’ as against its rivals. |
