单词 prochromosome
释义 prochromosome Cytology.|prəʊˈkrəʊməsəʊm|
Also with hyphen.
[ad. G. prochromosom (J. B. Overton 1905, in Jahrb. f. wissensch. Bot. XLII. 126): see pro-2 and chromosome.]
One of the densely staining heterochromatic masses seen in certain interphase nuclei, frequently associated with centromeres; = chromocentre.
1906Proc. R. Soc. B. LXXVII. 557 These bodies correspond in fact exactly to what in 1904 we have already described as the Anlagen of the premaiotic chromosomes in the corresponding cells in the testes of Periplaneta, and there can be no doubt that they represent also the structures subsequently alluded to as prochromosomes by Overton, Miyake, and Strasburger in the same stage in certain mono- and dicotyledonous plants.1907Ann. Bot. XXI. 335 In certain plants there is a tendency of the chromatin to form lumps or masses in the resting condition, in which there is often a general uniformity in size, and when the number of such lumps approaches the number of somatic chromosomes, each mass has been looked upon by some as representing a prochromosome, or the centre of organization of a chromosome.1934[see euchromocentre].1965A. K. & A. Sharma Chromosome Techniques viii. 205 The number of prochromosomes may be equal to, or if fused, less than, the number of chromosomes in the complement.1969Brown & Bertke Textbk. Cytol. i. 8/2 Flemming (1882) illustrated stained nodes in the nuclear network... Overton named them prochromosomes in 1905 and 3 years later Baccarini called them chromocenters; both names are still in use.
