gardenia|gɑːˈdiːnɪə| [mod.Lat., f. the name of Dr. Alex. Garden (died 1791), Vice-President of the Royal Society.] A genus of trees and shrubs, often spiny (family Rubiaceæ), natives of the Cape of Good Hope and of tropical Asia and Africa.
