A style of Chinese vessel, either wide-mouthed or animal-shaped (see quot. 1974). Also attrib.
1958W. Willetts Chinese Art I. iii. 144 The Sung cataloguers proceeded to identify as tsun various animal-shaped vessels known to them. 1974Encycl. Brit. Micropædia X. 162/3 Tsun,..generic term (‘sacrificial vessel’) for a wide range of Chinese vessel shapes, generally of the Shang (c. 1766–c. 1122 BC) and early Chou (c. 1122–c. 900 BC) dynasties, all of which have an ample interior volume probably meant for containing wine. There are two essential varieties of tsun: one is shaped like a much enlarged ku; the other consists of various animal shapes, often densely embellished with animal decoration. 1977Kwang-Chih Chang Archaeol.
