An acute infectious febrile disease of man and domestic animals caused by the bacterium Francisella tularensis, endemic among wild rodents in N. America and elsewhere, and transmitted to man by biting insects and by other means, producing very variable symptoms.

(U.S.) 29 July 1731 The names thus far used for this disease are strictly vernacular and do not lend themselves to international usage as easily as a name in Latin form.
