An instrument which makes possible a visual inspection of the interior of the stomach when passed into it via the mouth and œsophagus.
1888Lancet 7 July 35/1 A special means of examination introduced by Mikulicz—viz., the direct inspection of the gastric mucous membrane by means of a specially constructed gastroscope, to be termed gastroscopy. 1956J.
