Gegenschein, gegenschein Astr.|ˈgeɪgənʃaɪn| [G., f. gegen opposite + schein shine, glow; first used technically by T. J. C. A. Brorsen 1854, in Unterhaltungen im Gebiete der Astron. 17 May 156, after an earlier use in the same connection by F. H. A. von Humboldt c 1803, published in his Kosmos (1845) I. 144.] A patch of very faint nebulous light occurring in the ecliptic opposite the sun.
