Gethsemane|gɛθˈsɛməniː| [ad. L. (Vulgate) Gethsemani, Gr. Γεθσηµανῆ, ad. Aramaic gath shemānī(m) oil-press.] The name of a ‘garden’ or enclosure on the Mount of Olives, scene of the agony of Christ (Matt. xxvi. 36–46). Hence a. A representation in painting or sculpture of Christ's agony in the garden. b. A scene of spiritual or mental anguish; an instance of such anguish.
