1. Abbrev. of galvanized iron, used chiefly in G.I. can: (a) slang, a German artillery shell; (b) a galvanized-iron can; a rubbish-bin.
1928Papers Mich. Acad. Sci. & Arts X. 294 G.I. cans, German heavy shells, so called because of their similarity to the galvanized cans found around hospitals. 1929F. A. a. Used attrib. of equipment designed or provided for members of the armed forces of the U.S. and hence applied to things belonging to or associated with American servicemen; G.I. bride, a foreign woman married by an American serviceman while he is on duty abroad; G.I. Joe, an American soldier.
