aikido|aɪˈkiːdəʊ| [a. Jap., lit. ‘a way of adapting the spirit’, f. ai together + ki spirit + do: see judo.] A Japanese art of self-defence, also practised as a sport, which takes advantage of the opponent's strength to subdue him.
