Girondist, n. (a.)|dʒɪˈrɒndɪst|
[ad. F. Girondiste (now Girondin), f. Gironde (see def.) + -iste, -ist.]
A member of the moderate republican party (in the French assembly 1791–1793); its leaders were the deputies from the department of the Gironde (cf. quot. 1833). Also attrib. or adj.
