‖ tympanites Path.|tɪmpəˈnaɪtiːz| [Late L. tympanītēs, a. Gr. τυµπανῑ́της (Galen), f. τύµπανον drum: cf. ascites. So Pg. tympanites, F. tympanite (OF. timpanides), It. timpanite.] Distension of the abdomen by gas or air in the intestine, the peritoneal cavity, or the uterus.
