1. Mil.
a. An examination or survey of a tract of country, made with a view to ascertain the position or strength of an enemy, or to discover the nature of the ground or resources of the district before making an advance. Also Naval, a survey of a coast, etc. made for similar purposes.
reconnaissance in force, an advance made with a considerable body of troops to discover the position of the enemy.
