‖ uddiyana|uˈdiːjana| [ad. Skt. uddīyana rising up.] One of the physical exercises in Yoga (see quots.).
1949S. Kuvalayânanda Popular Yoga I. iii. 51 Uḍḍiyâna means rising up and Bandha means contraction of particular anatomical parts. This exercise is called Uḍḍiyâna-Bandha because the muscular contractions..enable the spiritual force to rise up. Anatomically this Bandha may be called Uḍḍiyâna because it raises the diaphragm. 1960J. Hewitt Yoga ii. 42 Uddiyana can be counted as one of the physical exercises. 1960Koestler Lotus & Robot iii. 117 Udiyama [sic]— drawing in the abdominal muscles, while forcing the viscerae and diaphragm upwards. |
