globoside, n. Biochem.|ˈgləʊbəsaɪd| [f. globule n. + -oside.] A substituted sphingolipid found in human erythrocytes.
1952Yamakawa & Suzuki in Jrnl. Biochem. XXXIX. 394 Because of the discrepancy of the analytical data obtained with our substance from those of Klenk's, we called this lipid ‘globoside’ for convenience' sake. Since the substance formed perfectly round globules (spherocrystals) under [the] microscope, the term ‘globoside’ would be adequate. 1963Jrnl. Biochem. LIII. 35/1 Globoside, the main mucolipid of human erythrocytes, was purified by repeated silicic acid column chromatography. 1973Chem. & Physics Lipids X. 28 Tay–Sachs' globoside..accumulates in brain with Infantile Amaurotic Familial Idiocy along with Tay–Sachs' ganglioside..as a result of an enzyme deficiency. 1985Makita & Taniguchi in H. Wiegandt Glycolipids i. 21 Globotetraosylceramide..was isolated as a major glycosphingolipid of human erythrocyte membranes..and named globoside. |
