[a. ON. glúpna to be downcast. A root of identical form appears in OFris. glûpa, MLG. glûpen to lie in wait for, Du. gluipen to watch slily, to sneak, OSw. glupa to gape, swallow, Sw. glupande, Da. glubende ravenous, fierce; whether there is any etymological connexion is uncertain.
