Used in the names of techniques involving a controlled throw in which the opponent's feet leave the ground, as uki-gatame |gaˈtame| [Jap. katame to fasten; hold, lock], the ‘floating hold’, a ground hold applied after one's opponent has been thrown; uki-goshi |ˈgoʃi| [Jap. goshi hip, loin], the ‘floating hip’ throw, by which the opponent is thrown by being brought forwards round one's hip; uki-otoshi |oˈtoʃi| [Jap., drop, trap], the ‘floating drop’, a hand technique; uki-waza |ˈwaza| [Jap., deed, trick], the ‘floating trick’, a sacrifice throw.
